We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Konstantinos “Kosta” Papamichael, a visionary researcher, educator, and leader in the field of daylighting design. As a professor of design and the founder and longtime co-director of the California Lighting Technology Center, or CLTC, at UC Davis, he advanced innovative, energy-efficient lighting and daylighting control technologies that have transformed sustainable building design.
Over his distinguished career, Professor Papamichael authored numerous publications, held multiple patents, and received the 2013 Illuminating Engineering Society Presidential Award for his leadership in developing the Recommended Practice for Daylighting Buildings. His pioneering research, mentorship, and dedication to integrating daylight, electric lighting, and building systems have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire colleagues, students, and the broader lighting community.
Papamichael retired from the College of Letters and Science on July 1, 2019. We extend our deepest sympathies to Kosta’s wife, Kathy Close, his family, his friends, his colleagues and students, and the broader community he touched.
