Alice Bucknell, an artist whose work explores the affective dimensions of video games, and Barbara London, a curator and writer who founded the video-media Exhibition and Collection Programs at The Museum of Modern Art, will give talks at UC Davis this October.
Both events are free and open to the public.
The talks are organized by The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies in the Maria Manetti Shrem Art Studio Program and the London talk is co-sponsored by the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum.
Alice Bucknell
Bucknell, the fall quarter visiting professor in The California Studio: Manetti Shrem Artist Residencies, will give their talk Oct. 1 at 5:30 p.m. in Cruess Hall, Room 1002.
The Los Angeles-based artist, writer and educator, explores video games as interfaces for understanding complex systems, relationships and forms of knowledge. They are interested in the limits of scientific knowledge and systems thinking, the weird possibilities of play, and the ecological dimensions of games that can dissolve binaries like humans versus environment, natural versus synthetic intelligence, and self vs. world. Bucknell’s work has recently been included in Centre Pompidou (France), Kunsthalle Praha (Czechia), and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. They were a 2025 Creative Capital Awardee and a 2026 Resident at La Becque in Switzerland and is an inaugural Fellow of the Serpentine Arts Technologies Future Art Ecosystems Research and Development Fellowship in 2026–27.
