UC Davis Professor of Art Robin Hill was recently awarded the “Anonymous Was a Woman” Award — a $50,000 unrestricted grant awarded each year to 15 women artists over the age of 40 who are at a critical junction in their career.

The name of the award, established in 1996, refers to a line in Virginia Woolf’s "A Room of One’s Own."

"I am so grateful to have received this award,” Hill said. “The award will provide the financial resources to enable me to push my work to the next level.”

Hill’s art lies at the intersection between drawing, photography and sculpture. She also teaches sculpture, drawing and special topics courses.

“I plan to realize new large-scale sculptural work and embark on research travel to learn about processes and materials that the work is thirsty for,” Hill said. “At its core, the award is a powerful gift of affirmation and recognition for a long career in visual art, still in formation. I am grateful for the support UC Davis has provided for my creative research over the years. One does not get here alone.”

Hill had two solo exhibitions in 2024, including All That You Touch at Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson, New York, and Carved Wax Drawings, 1996 at Another Year in LA, a Los Angeles-based art gallery. Her work has also recently been shown at Shelter in Place Gallery in Boston, JAYJAY in Sacramento, the Don Soker Gallery in San Francisco, and Lennon, Weinberg Gallery in New York City.
