Gözde Göncü-Berk, associate professor of design and a leader in the emerging field of wearable technology, recently received the prestigious Jacquelyn Anderson Wellness Innovation Award from the UC Davis Office of Wellness Education (OWE). The award honors individuals who exhibit outstanding innovation in research, education or advocacy within the realm of wellness.

The newly launched Maria Manetti Shrem Institute for Sustainable Design, Fashion and Textiles will serve as a first-of-its-kind hub dedicated to innovation, collaboration and global impact. Gözde Göncü-Berk, associate professor of design, has been named the inaugural Maria Manetti Shrem Endowed Chair in Design, Fashion and Textiles and the founding director of the Maria Manetti Shrem Institute for Sustainable Design, Fashion and Textiles at the University of California, Davis. Her work focuses on development of soft wearable systems that sense, respond and adapt to the body to enhance health, well-being and performance.
Inside an L-shaped room in Cruess Hall, surrounded by workstations, 3D printers, sewing machines, tools and mannequins wearing prototypes, Gozde Goncu-Berk builds the future. It’s a future of many possibilities, but those possibilities share a common thread. They’re all based around humanity’s increasing use of wearable technology.
Three faculty members from the College of Letters and Science are among UC Davis' newest class of Chancellor's Fellows, a title given to early career academics doing exemplary work. The Chancellor’s Fellows program was created in 2000, and this year’s class brings the total number of recipients to an even 200. Recipients carry the title for five years and are awarded $25,000 in unrestricted philanthropic support for research or other scholarly work.
