Beatriz Cortez was recognized "as as an artist whose work and vision shape the cultural and creative landscape in meaningful ways," as she was awarded the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego's ICA Star Award during the museum's Future Forward Gala this past spring. Artist Ashish Subedy also received the ICA Star Award.
Cortez is a sculpture artist and a professor of Chicana/o/x Studies at in the College of Letters and Science UC Davis.
Her work, Glacial Erratic (2020), is currently on view in the ICA San Diego Sculpture Trail. Glacial Erratic evokes an ancient boulder, like the numerous glacial erratics that populate the landscape and challenges how we imagine history, identity and the future.
