For Katie Cohen, part of undergrad life is made up of “the grind.” Now in her second year on campus, Cohen, a sociology major and L&S Ambassador, has also learned that friendships are what make for more than just the basic college experience.
The Davis Humanities Institute is on track to start anew. By fall 2025, it will become the campus hub for making connections and sharing ideas across the arts, humanities and beyond. Its goals include making a deeper impact on campus and in the community, providing more research opportunities for undergraduate students and supporting cross-collaborations between disciplines within the College of Letters and Science as well as other colleges within UC Davis.
Emily Marwedel is a service desk analyst with L&S IT. In 2018, she and colleagues at UC Davis Health co-founded Womxn in Tech at UC Davis, a group dedicated to ensuring that issues surrounding women in technology are reviewed and discussed with a focus on making continuous improvements towards equity.
By creating a board game designed to simulate a wildfire evacuation, UC Davis Associate Professor Thomas Maiorana and his team hope to help communities at-risk for wildfires think-through evacuation strategies in a low-stress environment, long before their lives are in danger. The prototype, "Tomales Resilience," was recently tested in the community that inspired it.
The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded a $500,000 grant to launch and fund the UC Davis Center for Artificial Intelligence and Experimental Futures (CAIEF). CAIEF will promote the democratic governance of AI systems by engaging diverse stakeholders in processes of creative worldmaking — crafting the world of tomorrow, together.
Exhibitions featuring new sculpture and installation commissions, paintings from world-renowned artists, and large-scale ceramics debut this fall at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis. The museum also has new hours beginning with its reopening Aug. 8, 2024.
We a deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of David Biale just following his 75th birthday. Biale was a professor emeritus at UC Davis and a long-time Berkeley resident.
UC Davis director of choirs and assistant professor of teaching Nicolás Alberto Dosman has just published a book to help those new to the profession. "Growing Your Choral Program: A Practical Guide for New Directors" was published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers in 2024.
