Nine faculty members from the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis are receiving support for their work through this year’s Hellman Fellowships, and it comes right when they need it most: early in their careers. Grants this year range from $15,000 to $40,000.

When she crosses the stage at the UC Davis Fall Commencement, the senior from Lakewood, California, will be the first in the family to have a four-year degree: a Bachelor of Arts in sociology with an emphasis in law and society.
The violence that erupted in Gaza in 2023 changed the political climate of teaching the Middle East in schools across the U.S. The UC Davis California History-Social Science Project has released new materials that teachers everywhere can use to confidently teach the history of both the Middle East and of Arab Americans.
Featuring a small ensemble of select dancers, Control/Shift, explores dance as it intersects with technologies of control and for connection. A highlight of the performance will be a post-show event providing insight into the creative process behind the choreographies and how they developed.
Every year, the Bodega Marine Laboratory hosts summer sessions for undergraduate students interested in coastal systems and marine science. During the roughly five-week program, students take classes in topics like coastal oceanography, marine environmental issues and biological oceanography. They conduct fieldwork and go on field trips to nearby sites like the Hog Island Oyster Company. Students can even live at the lab’s on-site dormitory during the session.

Created and curated by graduate student Emily Tonnos, "Embodiment" explores the intersectionality of exhibition, theatrical and narrative design practices to create an immersive experience through human emotion, multisensory perception, and a journey through personal struggle and growth. It opens at the UC Davis Design Museum on Oct. 8.
