The College of Letters and Science has honored two graduating students with its highest honors. For 2026, the Herbert A. Young Award was given to Jack Jacobs and the Leon H. Mayhew Memorial Award was given to Morgan Strong.
Over 100 years ago, civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois argued for an America in which democracy means equal representation for all. Philosopher Elvira Basevich looks back to Du Bois for how we might solve the problems workers face today.

Philosopher Hannah Tierney studies the idea of blameworthiness and what it means to successfully make amends. Her research focuses on the reparative process that unfolds after someone causes harm. It also offers insight into how to ease burdens of national guilt that might affect people across a society.
Lishan AZ, Laura Starkston and Hannah Tierney have been named the 2025 Dean’s Faculty Fellows for the College of Letters and Science at UC Davis. The three-year fellowships are part of the College of Letters and Science Faculty Investment Initiative to support early faculty research excellence and development.
